The 2025 Salzburg Festival is the world’s most important festival for opera, music and theatre.

The Salzburg Festival is the world’s most important festival for opera, music and theatre. Every year, the wide-ranging programme includes classics from these genres with world-famous artists.

The 2025 Salzburg Festival, from 18 July to 31 August, will offer around 170 opera, theatre and concert performances. Highlights of the opera programme include Peter Sellars‘ production of Gustav Mahler’s “Der Abschied” and Karl Kraus’ play ‘Die letzten Tage der Menschheit’ (The Last Days of Mankind). The concert programme will celebrate the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez with the series ‘À Pierre’. Georg Friedrich Händel’s baroque opera ‘Giulio Cesare in Egitto’ will provide the festive opening.

The leitmotif of this year’s festival operas is ‘power’, impressively embodied in Georg Friedrich Händel’s ‘Giulio Cesare in Egitto’, Gaetano Donizetti’s ‘Maria Stuarda’ and Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’ with Asmik Grigorian.

In addition to ‘Jedermann’, once again with Philipp Hochmair as Jedermann and Deleila Piasko as Buhlschaft, the co-production with the Vienna Burgtheater, ‘The Last Days of Mankind’ by Karl Kraus, stands out.

The ‘Ouverture spirituelle’ is themed ‘Fatum – Destiny.’ The Vienna Philharmonic will perform five concert programmes conducted by Andris Nelsons, Riccardo Muti, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Franz Welser-Möst and, for the first time, Lorenzo Viotti. The 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death and the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez will be commemorated.

To get you in the mood for the upcoming festival, here is a look back at the 2024 Salzburg Festival.

The festival ends on Sunday, 31 August. On Friday, 29 August, the Pride Festival Salzburg begins, marking the transition from one major cultural event to the largest queer event in the beautiful city on the Salzach and proving once again that Salzburg, with its mix of high culture and queer community, is an exciting destination for queer people.
