Salzburg Festival, Whitsun 2026

“Bon Voyage” – Have a wonderful journey. The perfect theme for the Salzburg Festival at Whitsun 2026.
The programme for the Salzburg Festival at Whitsun 2026 takes us on several journeys. The first major journey is to France. Gioachino Rossini’s opera *Il viaggio a Reims* transports us to a grand celebration in Reims, France, for the coronation of Charles X. The second opera, *Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria*, takes us out to sea. The main character of Claudio Monteverdi’s opera is the Greek hero Odysseus, who wishes to return to his wife by sea following the Trojan War.
A guest performance by the Hamburg Ballet, in collaboration with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, brings “The Little Mermaid” to the stage. The fairy tale by the poet Hans Christian Andersen is presented here as a ballet performance at the Großes Festspielhaus.
At the grand gala in the Großes Festspielhaus, opera singer Cecilia Bartoli embarks on a journey through time under the evocative title “Ciao, bella ciao”, featuring childhood melodies, canzoni and the defining moments of her international career. Here, her biography is presented with song and sound, as well as Italian charm.
Of course, a concert is a must at the Whitsun Festival. “Übers Meer” draws on Greek myths, much like the opera “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria”. The concert takes us on a musical journey in the footsteps of the Greek heroes Odysseus, Arion and Tancredi. Works by Cavalli, Durón, Schürmann, Ghizzolo and Monteverdi find their musical place here.
