Dance of the Planetary Wanderers
Dance has always fascinated people. In every era and every society, expression through dance has been and remains an essential part of culture.
Since 2023, dance has been a permanent feature of the Salzburg Easter Festival programme. Past performances have transported audiences into the worlds of Angelin Preljocaj’s Requiem(s), St John Passion and Emanuel Gat’s Dreams.
This year, the work ‘Planet [wanderer]’ takes us on a dance journey high into space. A story of planets and wanderers. Because planet comes from the Greek “planētēs” and means ‘the wanderer’. A fitting name for celestial bodies that not only wander continuously along their orbits, but also rotate around their own axes, as if they were dancing. It is not without reason that they have inspired people to dream since time immemorial.
Living in a barren world
It is dark, mystical and glittering. In a world consisting of black sand, meteorites and stardust, eight dancers perform on the large stage of the Salzburg Festival Hall. They embody the large planets in the firmament, which interact with each other in a dreamlike manner, repelling and attracting each other.
At first glance, everything seems barren and dry, yet so much life and emotion blossoms between the dancers. Space and time blur and the audience is captivated.
‘Artistic love at first sight’
The dreamy choreography of ‘Planet [wanderer]’ was created by Belgian dancer and choreographer Damien Jalet. He has previously appeared in Luca Guadagnino’s dance film “Suspiria” and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s opera ‘Satyagraha’.
Japanese artist Kohei is responsible for the scenography and the impressive stage design. He made a name for himself internationally with his monumental work ‘Throne’, which was exhibited at the Louvre in Paris in 2018.
Two renowned artists who have already worked together. The dance and theatre piece MIRAGE [transitory], which premiered in 2024, was conceived by the two artists, who say of themselves: ‘It was artistic love at first sight.’

Priscilla – Queen of the Desert
The film and musical ‘Priscilla – Queen of the Desert’ tell the story of two drag queens, Mitzi and Felicia, and a trans woman, Bernadette, who travel through the Australian outback in an ageing bus called ‘Priscilla’ to put on a show in Alice Springs.
