Tanto … Tango!
Power and tenderness is tango – in ten performances at the Salzburg Landestheater (State Theatre) until February 2022.
Reginaldo Oliveira has been ballet director at the Salzburg Landestheater since 2017. Since then, the dancer and choreographer, who grew up in Rio de Janeiro, has been convincing in Salzburg in many ways. With his 2018 ballet festival Balacobao, which brought a Brazilian attitude to life to the stage, as well as with his first full-length story ballet “Othello” at the Salzburg Landestheater.
Now, on October 18, “Tanto … Tango!”, an evening of tango, comes to the stage of the Salzburg Landestheater. “Tanto … Tango!” is a collaboration between ballet director Reginaldo Oliveira and the outstanding soloist of the Salzburg ensemble, chamber dancer Flavio Salamanka, who has already attracted attention as a choreographer (“Mozart Moves!”, “The Little Prince”). Flavio Salamanka, also Brazilian, joined Oliveira at the Salzburg Landestheater Ballet for the 2017/18 season. In the male lead role in Reginaldo Oliveira’s “Medea – The M. Case,” he thrilled press and audience alike as the Prince in Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” and Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.”

Tango ballads are dominated by the pulling melancholy of the bandoneon, their lyrics tell of loneliness, desire and life’s countless reasons to go crazy. There have been more than enough of these since Corona. The dirtiest neighborhoods of Argentina are the birthplace of the tango at the end of the 19th century, which soon conquered Buenos Aires, which unexpectedly blossomed into the most glamorous metropolis south of the equator. And from there, the whole world. Tango is danced in patios and courtyards, tango dance halls spring up, and in newly opened dance schools the “elegant” tango develops into a ballroom dance – to which dangerous passion still clings today.
“Tango as a dance is the most beautiful thing there is. You have to approach it with strength, with a lot of tenderness and many hours of work,” says Argentine tango expert Antonio Todaro. Strength and tenderness describe the most distinguished qualification of a ballet dancer, body tension. And so the dancers of the Salzburg Ballet Ensemble will devote themselves to the “Dance of Dances” with passion and offer an exciting dance experience at the Salzburg Landestheater. (pg)
