Berlin, end of the 1920s: The amusement-seeking metropolis dances on the volcano on the eve of the Third Reich. The social climate in Berlin at the time was very liberal. There were about 170 pubs and clubs for gay men. Life was vibrant and hedonistic.
The dream of every gay man
Attracted by this sizzling atmosphere of the big city (“Berlin is every gay man’s dream”), the American writer Clifford Bradshaw travels to Berlin. And there he makes the acquaintance of the frivolous society of the Kit-Kat Club. This develops into a (heterosexual) love story that ultimately fails because of the emerging Nazi ideology.
The book for the musical Cabaret, which premiered in New York in 1966, was written by Joe Masteroff based on Christopher Isherwood’s autobiographical novel Good-bye, Berlin (1939).
The English writer Christopher Isherwood lived in Berlin from 1929 to 1933 and experienced the heyday of this first gay-friendly period in history to the full. In his book ‘The Other Berlin’, Robert Beachy describes this eventful time, which came to an abrupt end with the Nazis’ rise to power, in great detail.
On 13.05.2022, the musical “Cabaret” will be revived on the stage of the Salzburg Landestheater. The alternation of large public scenes and small private situations gives “Cabaret” its breath. The music inspired by ragtime and early jazz as well as the inserted revue-like numbers in the Kit-Kat-Club give the flair of the 1920s. The music was written by John Kander and the lyrics by Fred Ebb. In the 1972 film version Liza Minnelli shone as Sally Bowles, and in 1973 the film won eight Oscars.
