Reopening of the New Residence
“The team of the Salzburg Museum is in the starting blocks and is pleased that the individual locations of the museum will be able to gradually resume operations from mid-May. The current plan is to start on 16 May with the reopening of the Neue Residenz, the Panorama Museum, the Hallein Celtic Museum and the Folklore Museum. Soon after that, the Fortress Museum should also start.” This is an excerpt from the press release of the Salzburg Museum.
The Salzburg Museum umbrella organisation comprises 11 museum locations in the city of Salzburg and the surrounding area. In addition to the main building, the Neue Residenz on Mozartplatz in Salzburg, these include the Fortress Museum at Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Cathedral Excavation Museum located beneath Residenzplatz and Domplatz, as well as locations in the surrounding area, such as the Celtic Museum in Hallein. The Celtic Museum is one of the largest museums of Celtic history and art in Europe and reflects the prehistory of Salzburg and its surroundings with the history of salt production, which was so important for the city’s prosperity. Hallein is worth a day trip in itself – in combination with a visit to the salt mines on the Dürrnberg.
Great World Theatre –
Salzburg State Exhibition 2020
In coordination with the Salzburg Festival, the Salzburg Museum, which is curating the provincial exhibition ‘Great World Theatre – 100 Years of the Salzburg Festival’, will complete it in the coming weeks so that it can be made accessible from the end of July. The exact date is still to be determined and will also depend on how the 2020 festival anniversary can be organised overall. In any case, the plan is to show the exhibition for longer than previously planned, namely until 31 October 2021. This will make it possible to realise the extensive accompanying programme with a large number of performances and events that have already been conceived. Of course, this will always be done in accordance with the possibilities and requirements imposed by the coronavirus pandemic and in compliance with the hygiene and social distancing rules in force at the time.
In any case, the Salzburg Museum’s announcement regarding the reopening of the Neue Residenz and other locations offers a glimmer of hope that ‘normal’ life is once again within reach. And since, as of today (2 May), hotels in Austria are also set to reopen on 29 May, it is slowly becoming possible to start planning trips again. Salzburg is not far away and is a hotspot for all culture lovers. And the queer scene in Salzburg is already working flat out on postponed events for the autumn. See you in Salzburg!
