Salzburg Orangery – Panorama | World Heritage Site

Right in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the southern part of the Mirabell Gardens, a new cultural highlight is taking shape: the Orangerie Salzburg – Panorama | World Heritage.

At the heart of the exhibition is Johann Michael Sattler’s famous Salzburg Panorama (1825–1829). This monumental circular painting depicts the city in all its splendour and makes it clear at a glance why the historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Sattler’s panorama conveys at a glance both the subject matter and the rationale for Salzburg’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Orangery is becoming a place where the concept of World Heritage is brought to life: it explores the history and philosophy of UNESCO World Heritage. It highlights the outstanding universal value of Salzburg as a cultural heritage site for all humanity. It provides information on current issues and challenges involved in shaping the future of cultural heritage for generations to come.

Through its own projects, exhibitions and events, it encourages discussion about World Heritage. For the first time in its history, the Panorama in the Orangery is fully accessible.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site with a digital twist

The Forum serves as a digital counterpoint to the historical painting: Developed in collaboration with the Ars Electronica Futurelab, this exhibition area features multimedia stations, a large video wall and interactive elements – inviting visitors to deepen their understanding of the history of the World Heritage concept, ask questions and discuss ideas for the future of life within World Heritage sites. The Orangerie Salzburg – Panorama | World Heritage combines history and digital perspectives, information and inspiration – and thus becomes a new, vibrant centre for art, culture and the future in the heart of the city.

The Salzburg Orangery – Panorama | World Heritage Site opens on 28 June 2026.
