Today’s Andräviertel in Salzburg is centred around the Church of St Andrew, situated opposite Mirabell Palace. In the 11th century, however, the old town of Salzburg only had a small bridgehead on the right bank of the Salzach. Today, this is the site of the square at the start of Linzergasse.

If you look from Steingasse to the other side of the Salzach, you can easily imagine where the first crossing of the Salzach in the Middle Ages was located. The bridgehead was expanded over the centuries and secured with city walls and bulwarks.

When Emperor Franz Josef I gave the fortifications to the Duchy of Salzburg in 1860, they were levelled. The new town of Salzburg was built around the Andräkirche on Mirabellplatz.

The Ceconi family, a construction company from Friuli in Italy, built magnificent town houses. They also laid out Franz Josef Street, following the course of the former fortifications and in honour of the emperor. The street leads to the Kurgarten park and the Rose Hill.

The Gay Village of Salzburg

Today the Andräviertel is a lively, urban part of Salzburg. On Thursdays there is a Schrannen market around the church, not only a culinary but also a social event.

In the quarter, theatre and music meet young tradespeople, old Viennese coffee house culture meets modern cuisine. The quarter is home to all the LGBT scene venues, Salzburg’s gay village if you will. Strolling around, you feel reminded of Paris or Vienna. And yet it is Salzburg.
