Salzburg is colourful

In his latest photo exhibition, ‘Salzburg is Colourful’, photographer Bernie Rothauer focuses on the queer scene in Salzburg. In the Stadtgalerie Rathaus in the heart of Salzburg’s old town, his photos speak louder than a thousand words.
The pictures show people. People of different ages, genders and identities, but with one thing in common: their personalities appear particularly colourful. This is particularly remarkable given that Rothauer’s photographs are all in black and white. This stylistic device is intended to illustrate the idea that, in the end, we are all the same people.

The photos show people hugging or kissing, for example. Despite the black and white colour palette, these photos in particular radiate a certain warmth. Many of the photos were taken at the Unite Parade and the Pride Parade in 2022. The photos show people laughing and celebrating, enjoying life together. Drag queens walking in high heels through the streets of Salzburg and parade participants grinning at the camera.
‘I portrayed people at the parades – those who worked there as volunteers and those who received help there. To show that all people are full of beauty and dignity, people like you and me,’ says Rothauer. A special place in the exhibition is given to Salzburg’s drag queen Gigi La Pajette. This was highlighted with four portraits of her own.

Bernie Rothauer is no stranger to Salzburg. As a freelance musician, he has explored West African, Brazilian and Cuban music. He has also appeared in various theatre productions, including the ‘Jedermann’ production at the Salzburg Festival. Since 2010, Rothauer has devoted himself to photography.
