Burgerreise in Salzburg

A burger tour through Salzburg

The burger is considered one of the most famous dishes in American cuisine. Hardly any other fast food has managed to spread so widely across the globe and be reinterpreted time and again. As part of the eat&meet culinary festival, Szene Lokal Salzburg (formerly ‘Stadtkino’) is therefore inviting guests on a special culinary journey: a burger tour across five continents.

Ewald Schwaiger, CEO of Szene Lokal, highlights his restaurant’s rich history. “As this year’s motto for the eat&meet festival is ‘boundless’ and Szene-Lokal was the first burger restaurant in Salzburg, we wanted to offer a journey across five continents. In the 1950s, during the occupation, Americans were housed in the building and left behind what is now Austria’s oldest American bar at Szene-Lokal.”

Five continents – Five burgers

Each of the five continents offers its own take on the burger. We start with the classic cheeseburger we all know and love – from the burger’s homeland: America. Next up is the sweet, vegetarian ‘Sweet Peanut Burger’ from Africa. For those with a taste for the spicy, there’s the Asian burger variant: served with spicy pork rind, BBQ sauce and jalapeños.

Off to Australia – and what is a classic Australian burger? Why, the ‘Crispy Fish Burger’ with tartar sauce, gherkins and cheddar cheese, of course. After this seafood treat, we return to Europe, back home. There, in our familiar homeland of Austria, a fried chicken burger with cranberries and cheddar cheese awaits us – a dish which, in our opinion, deserves to feature more often on the menus of traditional pubs.

Austria’s oldest American bar

This ‘American character’ is evident not only in the food but also in the restaurant’s atmosphere. Cosy lounge chairs and sofas, soft lighting and live DJ music in the background all contribute to the restaurant’s distinctly American vibe. It’s a welcoming and fitting atmosphere for a culinary burger journey.

“The burger has found its place in every culture around the world. Like pizza, it has become an integral part of life in every country on earth. That made it easy to come up with the various creations,” says Schwaiger, summarising the idea behind the burger tour.

For him, the food festival is a great opportunity to try something new: “The eat&meet Festival always offers the chance to try something new. The collaboration with the various dining concepts through the Old Town Marketing initiative works very well, and you feel part of a large community.”

For us, the burger tour was quite an experience. As for the trendy Salzburg eatery, one thing is certain: whether you opt for a classic cheeseburger just like 70 years ago or a new creation from the kitchen, a delicious meal is guaranteed here.

The eat&meet Culinary Festival runs until 28 March and features many more events. An overview of all events can be found here.
